The Cal-Adapt: Analytics Engine project was established to advance the integration of climate science into California’s electricity sector decision-making and operations. The project’s objective was to enable utilities, regulatory agencies, and policymakers to make informed, data-driven choices that enhance the safety, reliability, and affordability of the state’s electricity system while supporting its transition to carbon-free energy. Recognizing that weather and climate influence many aspects of electricity generation, delivery, and demand, the Analytics Engine provides the technological and scientific foundation required to incorporate modern climate information into energy planning and operations.
The project developed an advanced data infrastructure capable of managing and processing very large volumes of high-resolution climate information, including the first statewide collection of hourly climate projections tailored for energy applications. Complementing this infrastructure, the Analytics Engine delivers analytical tools, reproducible workflows, and user guidance that enable practitioners to apply climate data appropriately and consistently across key regulatory and planning processes.
The project was implemented through a collaborative approach that actively engaged utilities, state agencies, and other practitioners. This process led to the creation of the Python programing package called climakitae, development of a novel Data Catalog in the Analytics Engine, open-source analytical methods, and the adoption of innovative frameworks such as the Global Warming Level (GWL) approach that align scientific best practices with sector-specific needs.
Through open development, capacity building, and sustained engagement with partners, the Analytics Engine has transformed how climate information is used in California’s energy sector. It has strengthened institutional capacity, improved the transparency of climate analytics, and established a foundation for continued innovation in climate-informed energy system planning. The Cal-Adapt: Analytics Engine now serves as a model for collaborative climate data service delivery, supporting California’s ongoing leadership in climate adaptation and energy resilience.
Research described by this agreement was administered by CEC with ratepayer funds from the Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). This agreement’s Final Report describes original, energy-related research that contributes to California’s Fifth Climate Change Assessment (Fifth Assessment). The Fifth Assessment comprises a broad portfolio of research and synthesis reports that address California-specific research needs and knowledge gaps related to climate change. To ensure scientific rigor, Fifth Assessment research was peer-reviewed. This research effort was peer reviewed through external (journal) publications.
