California’s Fourth Climate Change Assessment (Fourth Assessment) builds on the success of past assessments by providing a new generation of downscaled climate projections to understand local impacts and technical studies of climate vulnerabilities and solutions.  To address the needs of local and regional governments, the Fourth Assessment includes reports for nine regions of the state. These summary reports were included for the first time as part of the State’s assessment process in part because the vast majority of adaptation planning and implementation will happen at local and regional scales. Each of these reports provides a summary of relevant climate impacts and adaptation solutions for a region of the state.

The regional reports in the Fourth Assessment also provide opportunities to assist local and regional governments in complying with new State mandates to plan for climate impacts through General Plans and Local Hazard Mitigation Plans (SB 379).  Related legislation (SB 246) has led the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to start a process to update the California Adaptation Planning Guide.

Workshops will bring together the researchers who authored the regional reports, local and regional government practitioners and community members.  Regional events are underway or being planned to help researchers connect with regional stakeholders and adaptation practitioners to communicate their findings, identify gaps that merit further inquiry, and strengthen researcher-practitioner partnerships.
